Join OPIRG, Council of Canadians and the Student Association for International Development (SAID) for a DOUBLE book launch/reading followed by a short discussion on Canada's "aid" in Africa. Texts by Yves Engler (Canada in Africa: 300 Years of Aid and Exploitation) and Paula Butler (Colonial Extractions: Race and Canadian Mining in Contemporary Africa) both focus on the colonial nature of Canada's mining interest in Africa through enforced economic prescriptions. Mr. Engler concludes that there is a divide between what we are told about Canadian policy as a benevolent force where in reality, Canada and corporations aggressively support policies that undermine/impoverish the continent. Ms. Butler's novel helps to connect these ideas with Canada's history of resource ownership and past racial/spiritual oppression of Indigenous peoples in order to build the nation we have today.
