2014 CBC Radio Peter Gzowski Intern Continues to Thrive
Graduate reflects on her achievements at Trent
“Don’t be scared. A lot of students fear their competition and shy away from the industry or job market they want to pursue and that is the worst thing you can do.” These are words of advice from Tracy Elliott, a recent Trent graduate and the 2014 recipient of the prestigious CBC Radio Peter Gzowksi internship.
While at Trent, Ms. Elliott studied History, but it was through her experiences both inside and outside the classroom that she discovered a passion for radio and broadcasting. As a first year student, Ms. Elliott found Trent Radio where she began to host weekly shows – a pattern she continued throughout her time at Trent. She also took advantage of Trent’s study abroad program, studying at Nottingham-Trent University in England where she also became involved with their student radio station as an on-air host. Her background in broadcast makes it no surprise that Ms. Elliott was selected as the 2014 CBC Radio Peter Gzowski intern.
She reflects on her time spent with CBC as a summer of growth and learning where she was “surrounded by the best team of talented and approachable professionals.” Ms. Elliott accepted a job offer from CBC after the completion of the internship where she worked for six additional months as an associate producer for CBC Radio 2.
Today, Ms. Elliott is working in the heart of Toronto doing a job she loves after recently accepted a job offer from Bank of Montreal’s financial intelligence unit as an anti-money laundering and counter terrorist finance investigator. Although Ms. Elliott had no prior experience with banking, she says the experiences she gained at Trent and through the CBC internship helped land her the job.
“All the things Trent has available to students has helped me get where I am today,” she says.
The sought-after CBC Radio Peter Gzowski Internship, which runs from May through August, is offered to students at four universities across the country, including Trent.
