Trent University Number One Among Primarily Undergraduate Universities in Canada and Ontario

Local university moves from 36th to 30th spot on research ranking in one year

An independent analysis done by The Impact Group and released today to national media confirmed that Trent University ranks number one for attracting new research funding among all primarily undergraduate universities in Canada.

The study confirmed that Trent University has moved from 36th spot on a national ranking to 30th spot in one year. The report, based on Statistics Canada data, ranked universities' performance in obtaining research funds and records changes between 1999 and 2000.

Chris Metcalfe, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, says the report's findings are an affirmation of Trent University's research strategy. "The Impact Group's study confirms Trent's excellent research performance. It also affirms our track record for conducting world renowned research, as reported in Macleans' annual review of universities. This latest performance indicator pays tribute to Trent University's faculty who are doing a fantastic job to acquire new funding and conduct innovative research. It is important to realize that the funds that we received from granting councils represents only a small part of the total $7.4 million that we received last year for research at Trent." Metcalfe adds that every dollar of research brought into the university adds to Trent's $126.4-million contribution to the local Peterborough economy.

Trent University focuses its research activities on eight research priority areas including:

  • Archaeological Studies
  • Environmental and Resource Management Studies
  • Canadian Studies
  • Native Studies
  • Cultural Studies
  • Health Studies
  • Quantitative Modeling
  • International Studies
