Registration Now Open for University Prep 101 Course at Trent

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

All Students Advised to Sign Up for Online Course and Help Ease the Transition into University

Friday, April 21, 2006, Peterborough

The Academic Skills Centre at Trent University is encouraging all students who will be entering university in the fall and are interested in learning the skills needed to succeed at the post-secondary level to register for University Prep 101, a non-credit online summer preparation course which will run from Monday, July 17 to Friday, August 18.

"The transition to university can be difficult," said Erin Stewart Eves, Coordinator of the UP101 course. "This course gives students the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of university expectations so they won't be caught off guard when classes begin."

The five week course, which requires an average of 10-15 hours of work per week, uses readings from a variety of disciplines and introduces students to the range of assignments that are typical to a first-year university program. In addition, students have access to their own personal university tutor who will act as a mentor as they develop and hone their skills in writing, reading, critical thinking, and time management.

"This course teaches students about the things they need in their tool kit besides pens, papers, and MP3 players," Ms. Stewart Eves said.

As a course that offers students a "reality check" as to what they can expect when they enter a university classroom for the first time, or receives their first graded paper, Ms. Stewart Eves also stresses that University Prep 101 is a good idea for any student, regardless of previous academic standing. In fact, all recent high school graduates, college transfer students, and mature students who have plans to attend university in the near future are welcome to register, even if they plan to attend a university other than Trent. And, as an online course, all students with access to the Internet are able to participate, no matter where they are in the world.

Students who participate in the online course also have the option to register for a four-day, three-night Residential Orientation session at Trent University, which takes place on Thursday, July 13 through Sunday, July 16. During these four days, students will stay in a single, air-conditioned room in Gzowski College and will have the opportunity to meet other students who are participating in the online course. This orientation is also a great chance for students to explore the academic, athletic, and social offerings available at a first-rate university. For students attending Trent in the fall, there is also an opportunity to register for courses, learn to navigate the campus, and have their student-card photograph taken.

The cost of the five week online course is $425. The total cost of the online course and the Orientation weekend is $625. According to Ms. Stewart Eves, the cost can be seen as a worthy investment, as University Prep 101 teaches skills that can be transferred to any general arts and science university program.

Students can find out more information or register for the University Prep 101 course by e-mailing uprep@trentu.ca, calling the Academic Skills Centre at 705.748.1720 or by visiting the web site at www.trentu.ca/academicskills/uprep.

The deadline for registering is Monday, July 3. A non-refundable deposit of $100 is required upon registration.
