Trent University Sponsors Public Talk on Women on Death Row in the United States |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Kathleen O'Shea – Social Worker, Published Author, and Former Nun – will Speak at the Peterborough Public Library on March 30 Tuesday, March 21, 2006, Peterborough The Departments of Women Studies, Political Studies, and Sociology at Trent University, along with the Elizabeth Fry Society of Peterborough, are pleased to be sponsoring a free public talk by Kathleen O'Shea, a social worker and former nun who researches female offenders with an emphasis on women on death row, on Thursday, March 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the Peterborough Public Library. The talk is entitled "Women on Death Row in the United States: An Update on Invisibility". Ms. O'Shea, a former nun of 30 years, is a teacher, activist and lecturer as well as author of several books including, Female Offenders: An Annotated Bibliography; Women and the Death Penalty in the United States: 1900-1998, and Women on the Row: Revelations from Both Sides of the Bars, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2000. Ms. O'Shea is currently working on an anthology of testimonies about women who disappeared or were tortured or murdered in Chile during the 17 years of military dictatorship under General Augusto Pinochet from 1973-1990. Rumoured to be the only person who, at one point, had contacted every woman on death row in United States prisons, Ms. O'Shea travels tirelessly to educate the public about the inhumane treatment of death row inmates. Recently, she lived and worked as Writer-in-Residence at Innisfree Village, a life-time facility for mentally challenged adults in rural Virginia.
