Explore "The Canoe and Canoeing in Canadian Cultures" with Trent University Continuing Education

Thursday, March 17, 2005, Peterborough

Trent University's Continuing Education Department is pleased to offer "The Canoe and Canoeing in Canadian Cultures" with instructor Bruce Hodgins, Professor Emeritus in History and Canadian Studies and former board member of the Canadian Canoe Museum. The course starts March 23.

Prof. Hodgins has also led numerous northern Canadian canoe trips, and will teach this course in association with Bryan Poirier, graduate student and former education coordinator at the Canadian Canoe Museum.

Building on the success of the previous course on the same theme, Prof. Hodgins will serve as a guide for this exciting exploration into the role of the canoe and canoe travel in Canadian cultures and history. Drawing on the mediums of film, literature, and photography, this series of collaborative sessions promises to be of interest to avid canoe scholars and beginners alike.

The breadth of topics for investigation will include the tragedies and triumphs of Canada's canoeing history; the Canadian canoe building tradition; local, near-north, and far-northern canoe routes; the making of the Canadian Canoe Museum, and more. One of the six weekly course meetings will be held at the Canadian Canoe Museum.
A guided daylong canoe trip will also be offered during the course for interested participants. A field trip fee of $20 is payable to the instructor.

The course takes place Wednesdays, from 7 – 9 p.m. from March 23 to April 27. The fee is $139 or $125 for students, seniors and alumni. For more information or to register, call 748-1229 or visit www.trentu.ca/continuinged
