Trent University Department of Athletics and Recreation Recognized with Award of Excellence

Winner of the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association Ontario's Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award for the second consecutive year

Friday, June 4, 2004, Peterborough

The Department of Athletics at Trent University has received, for the second consecutive year, the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association (CIRA) Ontario's Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award 2003 - 2004.

Coordinator of Campus Recreation, Sue Robinson, received the honour for the co-ordination of the more than 2,250-student strong program at Trent. CIRA Ontario awards the Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award annually to top programs in Ontario. Trent was among the schools recognized for offering a variety of activities that promote fun, physical activity, inclusion and cooperative participation, and use of students in a leadership capacity.

Ms. Robinson says her philosophy for the program is to offer students as many physical activities and recreational opportunities as possible. Twelve new opportunities, including a nordic ski clinic and downhill snowboard and ski trip, were added in 2003/04 for a total of 43. Another 12 new opportunities are scheduled for the fall.

"If students have the opportunity to try different things, it's likely they'll find something they like and will continue to do. This will lead to a healthy lifestyle and a more balanced life," says Ms. Robinson, adding Trent's program offers a diverse range of activities including, competitive and non]competitive leagues and tournaments, as well as skill development clinics.

"We've tried to build a solid base of clinics and how-to activities on the basis that if you try an activity, you may find something you will love for life."

The number of students who participate in the activities is a testament to the program, says Athletic Director Bill Byrick. Participation in 2003/04 increased by more than 450 students over 2002/03.

"The high student participation rate is indicative of the department's innovative approach to intramural programming," he said. "We are delighted to have been chosen for this award for the second consecutive year; it is deserving recognition to Sue and her crew for the dynamic work they do."
