FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UNIVERSITY REMAINS OPEN DURING ARAMARK’S DISPUTE

Negotiations do not involve bargaining units representing Trent University employees

The membership of the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 3205 voted to begin strike action against Aramark Canada Limited effective October 12.

As a result of the vote, some pickets were established on the weekend at the perimeters of the Symons Campus and Otonabee College.

It is important to emphasize that this labour issue is between Aramark’s management and the members of CUPE Local 3205. The negotiations do not involve bargaining units representing Trent University employees.

The University’s operations will continue, and every effort will be made to minimize disruptions and inconveniences. Aramark has advised the University that they will continue to provide meals, with some modifications to hours and locations.

The only legal role of a picket line is for those on strike to give students and employees information about their strike and ask for support. Students and employees have the right to cross without harassment or intimidation. If individuals decide to cross the picket line, they are encouraged to do nothing that would antagonize those on the picket line. Students and employees can advise those on the picket line that they wish to cross; they can also give picketers a moment to tell about their situation. All employees are advised that despite the presence of a picket line, they have the right and obligation to report to their place of work without harassment and intimidation.

Further information about the Aramark-CUPE labour dispute will be provided as appropriate.
