Joe Teft, 2003 Trent Graduate, Wins National Fellowship

June 23, 2003

On June 15, Joe Teft accepted the $25,000 TD Meloche Monnex Advancement Fellowship at the London Convention Centre during the Canadian Council for Advancement of Education annual national conference.

The Fellowship was awarded to three candidates across Canada, out of twenty-two applications. It allows a young university graduate to work in three areas of university advancement. During Mr. Teft’s one-year appointment, he will work with alumni affairs, annual giving, student recruitment and communications. The Trent proposal focuses on planning and research in preparation for the University’s 40th anniversary in 2004.

"I never knew how important educational advancement was until I worked in the alumni office as a student assistant," commented Mr. Teft. He juggled a full course load in his fourth year, numerous extracurricular activities and three part-time jobs, in alumni affairs, athletics and campus tours. In his final weeks at Trent, he received the David Glassco award as a graduating student who demonstrates sportsmanship in Champlain College athletics, the Campus Recreation award for most participation by a Champlain male student and the Trent University Athletics award for an upper year student who makes significant contributions to both varsity and intramural athletics.

Mr. Teft recalled the impact of retired faculty member Professor John Syrett. "He changed the way I looked at history." Mr. Teft cites Professor Syrett as an important mentor with whom he has kept in contact. In his role as athletic convenor for intramural ultimate frisbee, Mr. Teft lauded the "opportunity to do what I love to do, and share it with others." Mr. Teft also offered the general observation that there is a great sense of community at Trent. "It’s wonderful to go to a school where everyone including the president knows your name," he says. On May 30, 2003 the anthropology/history major received his Bachelor of Arts degree. Mr. Teft was excited and pleased that a number of University staff and faculty, including President Bonnie Patterson, greeted him by name to express their congratulations.

The fellowship is generously donated by TD Financial Group and Meloche Monnex, as part of their significant and ongoing support of the educational advancement field in Canada.
