Trent University Celebrates 36th Convocation

Trent University is a flurry of activity this week as graduates, faculty and staff prepare for the University’s 36th spring convocation. Degrees will be conferred upon 1068 undergraduate and 52 graduate students, and one distinguished Canadian will receive an honorary degree.

Dr. Roberta Bondar, Canada’s first female astronaut, distinguished physician, scientist and photographer, will be installed as Trent’s ninth Chancellor at the morning convocation. She will then preside over both the 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. ceremonies to be held on the podium of the Bata Library at the University's Symons Campus.

Bachelor of Arts and Science degrees for Catharine Parr Traill, Otonabee, and Julian Blackburn College students will be conferred during the morning convocation. Also at that ceremony, the Distinguished Research Award will be presented to Professor John Topic. Professor Joan Vastokas will receive the Professor Emeritus Award.

At the afternoon ceremony, an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree will be conferred upon one of Canada’s foremost professional dancers, Frank Augustyn. David Page, Professor of Latin and Roman History, will receive the Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching. Also at this time, Trent will bestow upon Linda Slavin, the Eminent Service Award. Arts and Science degrees for Champlain, Lady Eaton and Peter Robinson College students will be conferred, along with doctoral, master’s and bachelor of business administration and diploma programs.

A total of 1120 students will receive degrees at the two ceremonies. The University will grant 49 master’s degrees - 21 in the arts and 28 in the sciences - and 3 PhD’s. It will confer honours bachelor degrees on 414 arts and 202 science graduands, and general bachelor degrees on 256 arts and 90 science students. Forty-nine will receive bachelor of business administration degrees and five will receive diplomas for successful completion of other diploma programs.

All graduating students achieving a cumulative average of A- (80%) or better are named to the President's Honour Roll. Students who achieve an A- average in their most recent session and who have a cumulative average of B (75%) or better, have their names placed on the Dean's Honour Roll. 204 students will be listed in the 2003 Convocation Program as members of the President's Honour Roll, and 309 names will appear on the Dean's Honour Roll.

Statistics from the Office of the Registrar show that 71% of graduates are female, while 29% are male. Students between the ages of 22 and 23 constitute 56% of graduates; 30% are between 24 and 30, while 10% of grads are between 31-50 years of age. There are 12 students graduating who are above the age of 51.
