Trent University Mourns the Loss of Dave Binkley, Librarian |
||
"From the time he began his career as a librarian, Dave distinguished himself through his energy, the broad range of his interests and capabilities, his commitment to his chosen profession and his wide-ranging intellect," said Mr. Tom Eadie, Chief Librarian. An author of numerous journal articles, Mr. Binkley had a keen interest in a variety of topics including educational history, deconstruction, computer-aided instruction and reference evaluation. He had a lifelong interest in philosophy and was self-taught in computer programming. While working at California State University at Chico, Mr. Binkley used his expertise in library interlending loan systems to develop the widely known AVISO software that continues to be used in university libraries to this day. "AVISO brought Dave a national and international reputation and he gave dozens of conference papers related to his work," said Mr. Eadie. Mr. Binkley's work on document delivery systems continued at Simon Fraser University, where he contributed to the development of GODOT, a ground-breaking document request system. "Dave Binkley's colleagues at Trent knew him as an innovative librarian who was devoted to service to students and the University community. He will be missed very much by his family, colleagues and friends," said President and Vice-Chancellor Bonnie Patterson. In his management role in Trent's Computing department, Mr. Binkley laid the groundwork for many of the University's current technological systems and services. He implemented GODOT and led the challenging migration to Trent's current Library Automation System. Mr. Binkley also co-wrote the joint Trent-Fleming application to the SuperBuild program, acquiring $3.6 million in funding for Trent's high-speed connection to Canada's research networks and new computer labs in the Bata Library. Mr. Binkley was a graduate of the University of Toronto, the University of Western Ontario and the University of Waterloo. Prior to his employment at Trent, he worked in librarian positions at Simon Fraser University, California State University at Chico and the University of Waterloo. He is survived by his wife Nancy Eaton and her son Jack, and by his mother Paula, and father, Professor Emeritus Robert W. Binkley, former Head of Philosophy at the University of Western Ontario, and brothers Paul, Peter and Sam. In place of a funeral, a memorial service will be held in memory of Mr. Binkley at a future date to be announced following cremation. The Trent University community was saddened to hear of the death of Mr. Dave Binkley, Librarian. Mr. Binkley died on February 25 at the Palliative Care Unit at Peterborough Regional Health Centre's Rogers Street site after a lengthy illness.
