Welcome to the Library & Archives!

Welcome Back to the Library & Archives this Fall!

Welcome to all new and returning Trent University students! The Bata Library is pleased to be your place for both individual and collaborative study, learning and research.

  • If you have 20 minutes we encourage you to take part in one of our daily library tours at Bata Library at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. We will show you how to access all of our library resources and services. No sign up is required – meet in the library atrium.
  • Our librarians are always available to provide research assistance, as well as citation help. We invite you to drop by the library, email  or visit our webpages for more information at
  • There are several online help guides and tutorials available to students on using the library catalogue, finding articles, etc.
  • Learning Zones: The library is divided into 3 coloured learning zones to provide  students with study options to meet individual learning styles – each floor of the library has its own colour . The 1st floor is a yellow zone, the 2nd floor is green, the 3rd floor is Red (Silent Floor) and 4th floor is yellow. The colours indicate the level of permissible noise levels and what drink/food is allowed in those areas. Choose your study spot based on these zones – for those who seek absolute quiet, the 3rd floor is designated as the SILENT floor!
  • Graduate Study Reading Room: BL 314 is a Reading Room designated for Graduate Students only. The room is accessible using your TrentU card. This space will provide Graduate Students with dedicated quiet study space on campus as they prepare for comprehensive exams, writing of theses and dissertations and preparing for defences.
  • The Library MADGIC Unit (Maps, Data and Government Information Centre) is located on the 4th floor of the library. The Madgic Unit offers support to students and researchers on GIS . The Unit is the centre for geospatial and statistical data and is also a repository for maps and aerial photos to assist with your studies. For more information visit the webapge at:
  • Our Library Service Desk on the main floor of the library is the place to go for reserve material and for general information on Inter-Library Loans and to check out library material. There is also a self check-out kiosk on the 2nd floor.
  • The Archives is located on the 1st floor of the library. Stop in for a tour or learn more about our archival holdings. The Trent archives is the regional repository for historical records related to the Trent Valley area. The archives is a valuable resource for your research.
  • The Library & Archives has a branch library at our Durham Campus. Students at the Durham branch of the Library have access to the same resources as students on the Symons campus and can request books form the Symons campus. For more information about services and resources at the Durham branch, visit

We wish all of you a wonderful year and hope the library can be your partner in achieving academic success.
