Introduction

The office of President and Vice-Chancellor of Trent University has been filled by the following incumbents: Thomas H.B. Symons, 1963-1972; Richard Sadleir (Acting), 1968, 1971; Thomas Nind, 1972-1980; Marion Fry (Acting), 1977; Donald Theall, 1980-1987; Roy Edwards (Acting), 1984; John Stubbs, 1987-1993; David Morrison (Acting), 1993; Leonard Conolly, 1994-1997; David Smith (Interim), 1997-1998; Bonnie Patterson 1998-2009; Steven Franklin 2009-2014; Leo Groarke 2014-current.

Records have been forwarded primarily from the offices of Thomas H.B. Symons, Thomas Nind, Donald Theall, John Stubbs, Leonard Conolly and Bonnie Patterson. The Symons papers were originally accessioned as accessions 80-024 and 80-025, and now comprise boxes 1 to 25 , and 26 to 32, respectively. The subject areas, covering the years 1962 to 1972, include the academic and physical set-up of Trent University , fund raising, and public relations between Trent and the City of Peterborough . Some of the Nind papers were accessioned as accession 80-026, and now comprise boxes 33 and 34. Further Nind additions comprise boxes 35 to 40 . The subject areas, covering the years 1972 to 1980, include the financial management of the University, Status of Women, and fund raising. The Theall papers, covering the years 1971 to 1985, comprise boxes 41 to 63 . Included are COU circuletters, day letter files, Hansen Report documents, OCUA briefs, and papers relating to various administrative and academic departments. The Stubbs papers, covering the years 1981-1987, comprise boxes 64 to 84 folder 20. Included is a videocassette of the installation of President Stubbs, papers relating to faculty and staff, endowments, budgets, research grants, Canadian Federation for the Humanities, Board of Governors, and various administrative and academic departments. The Conolly papers, covering the years 1982 to 1996, comprise boxes 84 folder 21 to box 90 folder 3. The papers consist of day letters, mail logs, and various administrative and academic files. An additional folder (box 90 folder 4) concerning President Symon's efforts to draft the Trent Act, etc., 1962-1963, was forwarded to the Archives by Diane Choate in August 1998. Papers forwarded from the office of Bonnie Patterson include correspondence from University faculty, 1963-1987, provincial auditor files, and files relating to University programs, etc., and cover the dates 1980-1995.

Also included in RG1 are the Presidential Search and Review Committee Records. (The 1983 records were accessioned as 83-019). These are periodically added to, and are shelved in the vault.
