TITLE: Untitled ACCESSION # 2000.020.1

ARTIST: Marmaduke Matthews R.C.A., P.O.S.A. (1837-1913)

Marmaduke Matthews was born in Barcheston, England in 1837. He grew up in Fifield, Oxfordshire and studied art under T.M. Richardson at Oxford. In 1860, he emigrated to Canada and settled as an artist on the outskirts of Toronto. He traveled widely in both Canada and the United States. He was involved in both the O.C.A. as well as the R.C.A. He also traveled out west in order to paint along the CPR line for Sir William Van Horne. In 1891, he purchased several acres in Toronto in the Bathurst-Davenport area and along with a colleague developed an artists' colony of residential homes known as Wychwood Park.
