    Biographical history

    Robert Waddell and Hugh Waddell were brothers who were both businessmen in Durham County in the middle to late 1800's and the early 1900's. Robert Waddell resided in Balieboro and Hugh Waddell lived in Millbrook, Ontario.

    Custodial history

    This fonds was in the custody of descendants of the Waddell brothers until it was donated to the Trent University Archives.

    Scope and content

    The fonds consists of day books, ledger books, dry goods receipts, and records of Robert Waddell of Bailieboro, Canada West and Ontario and Hugh Waddell of Millbrook, Canada West and Ontario. The records consists of property and chattel mortgages.

    Physical condition

    The collection is extremely moldy. Three of the ledgers are encapsulated in mylar and are unavailable for research. The records are fragile. Do not photocopy.

    The fonds was donated by Mrs. Joan Waddell of Toronto, Ontario via Mr. Meredith Glassco of Peterborough, Ontario.

        Six large ledger books:

        Volume 1: Robert Waddell of S. Monaghan Twp. - records of mortgages, bank receipts, store receipts. Also some records of Hugh Waddell - letters concerning property transfers, dry goods receipts. These are all pasted in a day book dated 1867-1870.
