Who is Eligible to Live in Residence?
Any student registered in an undergraduate program at Trent University (typically a Bachelor’s Degree or ESL program, including the Bachelor of Education) is eligible to live in residence. Students are expected to be registered in courses for the entirety of their time in residence and will be required to vacate residence if they withdraw from all of their courses and/or withdraw from their program prior to the end of the term.
Students enrolled at the Graduate Level (Masters, PhD, or Post-Graduate Certificate) can explore our Upper Year and Graduate Student Special Offer or Off-Campus Housing.
Who is Guaranteed?
All incoming first year and international Trent University students are guaranteed residence. This means that as long as you apply, pay our $50 application fee, and pay our $500 residence deposit by June 4, 2025, at 11:59 P.M. ET, you will be guaranteed a bed in residence with us for the 2025-2026 academic year.
Our residence guarantee does not include your preferred room location or type – students will be selecting their own rooms based on when they paid their $50 application fee in July.
Returning Students who are not incoming first-year Trent Students are not guaranteed residence but are still welcome to apply.
Accessibility & Unique Needs in residence (AUN)
If you are requesting individualized accessibility & unique needs in residence due to medical, disability or religious needs please complete the Accessibility & Unique Needs in Residence request form in the application process and refer to the Accessibility & Unique Needs in Residence request website for additional information. Accessibility & unique needs request must be identified by the June 4, 2025, deadline. More details about required documentation and medical attestation can be found on the website link above or in the residence application on the Housing Portal.
Residence Living Learning Communities
If you are applying for a Living Learning Community (LLC), your application will be reviewed, and you will be notified if you have been selected. For more information on Residence Learning Communities available please refer to the Residence Learning Communities page.
How to Apply
- Fill out a Residence Application
- Complete the Living Learning Community section of the residence application
- Rank your top 3 preferences of Living Learning Community themes
- For each LLC preference, you will be asked to answer three questions about your motivation for applying to the LLC
- Why are you interested in applying for this LLC theme?
- What experiences and/or skills are you hoping to gain while living in the LLC?
- What will you contribute - experiences and/or skills - to the LLC?
If you leave a section blank, your application will be considered incomplete. Please answer all the questions on the application. Applications are reviewed and scored by the Residence Life and Education team following the application deadline at the beginning of June.
Applicants will be selected based on their effectiveness in demonstrating their experiences and genuine interest in the theme of the LLC; a commitment to continuous learning within the theme; and ability to contribute creatively to the theme.
Important Notes:
Should you be successful in receiving a placement in one of our Living Learning Communities, you will take part in the self-selection process. If you have selected a roommate on your residence application, you must both be accepted to the same Living Learning Community to live together.
Cancellations
Once students cancel their application via the Housing Portal, all eligible refunds are processed automatically.
Please note, the residence application fee is a non-refundable $50 fee, required to access and use Trent’s Housing Portal application software Guidelines for refunds of the Residence Deposit can be found below:
For waitlisted/returning students
If you are no longer interested in living in residence or are no longer planning on attending Trent University, please ensure you cancel your residence application (take a look at our walkthrough video). It is important you cancel as soon as possible so we can provide your space to another student on our residence waitlist.
Students who cancel off our waitlist will be eligible to have their full $500 residence deposit returned to them. This will remain as a credit on a student’s Account Statement – located in your MyTrent Portal under Finances. As soon as a student receives a room offer or timeslot from us, their $500 deposit is no longer refundable. As such, please ensure you cancel your application within 24 hours of securing alternative housing to avoid getting a room booking/timeslot and not being eligible for a deposit refund.
About Roommate Selection
Students will only be able to select roommates who have the same gender preferences (Male/Female/Gender Inclusive Housing).
Students who are admitted to a Living Learning Community will only be able to select Roommates who are other students also accepted into that LLC.
During self-selection, the member of the roommate group with the earliest self-selection time slot will be able to assign their approved roommates to the available beds in multi-occupancy spaces (suites, double room, and adjoining premium single rooms in Gzowski).
Considerations for AUNs and LLCs
Note: If you have forwarded an accessibility & unique needs (AUN) in residence request and supporting documentation prior to the deadline, you will receive a letter with a room assignment in July. More information about accessibility & unique needs in residence requests is available on the accessibility & unique needs in residence requests page.
If you have applied and have been accepted into a living-learning community, you will be assigned a room in the designated community location, if you have indicated you would like to be part of an Academic Cluster you will be assigned a residence room. More information about our Living-Learning Communities and academic clusters and their locations are available on the Themed Residence Learning Communities page.
